Garmin Nuvi 1490T 5" Sat Nav with Europe Maps and Lifetime Traffic Alerts
List Price: £199.99
If you're one of those people that's seen other sat navs from TomTom or Garmin and thought "That's nice, but I wish the screen was a little bit bigger." Then the Garmin Nuvi 1490T could be the one for you. With a 5" screen, European maps and advanced features such as lane guidance, speed camera database and traffic alerts it's going to be difficult to resist.
European Maps. If you do any kind of driving in Europe then you're going to be all set with the 1490.
Advanced Route Planning. You can break up longer journeys, maybe in Europe, into smaller trips with stop-off points. You also get Lane Assistance and Junction View, both of which will make sure that you are perfectly positioned to make your turn with the minimum of fuss.
Bluetooth. Connect the 1490 to your mobile phone via the Bluetooth connection and you can make and receive hands-free phone calls.
Traffic Alerts. Included is free lifetime subscription to traffic alerts in the UK and Europe. Once the Garmin 1490T receives information about traffic congestion further along your route you will be alerted and the route will be re-calculated to avoid the delay.
Road names. Instead of the usual instructions, such as "Take the second left", you can get something more precise, such as "Take the second left into Windsor Avenue." This allows you to double check the street name, so you know you're definitely on the right track.
Walking. You expect that the sat nav is for use in the car and the car alone. But the 1490T can also guide you as you walk around town or when taking public transport. Additionally, city guides, from places such as the AA, can be downloaded and used during your walkabout.
Speed Cameras. Garmin also include the Cyclops database of speed cameras, fixed and mobile, in the 1490T. The database is updated daily. So, as long as you remember to update you will get alerted when driving in the vicinity of a speed camera.
In the box you get everything you need to get started: power cable to connect to the cigarette lighter, car mounting kit, usb cable and computer software.
The only downside to the 1490 is the touchscreen - it can sometimes be a little difficult entering and accepting the options.
Summary: Beautiful extra widescreen display, traffic alerts and the pedestrian mode all make the Garmin 1490 a very attractive proposition for any European driver or traveller .
